SAVUDRIJA LIGHTHOUSE

Enjoy the view of the elegant Savudrija lighthouse located on the seafront, just a few steps away from Lighthouse campsite. It was built in 1818 under the auspices of Francis I, emperor of Austria. The lighthouse is still active and easily accessed, but it’s not open to the public. According to a legend, Austrian Count Metternich dedicated the building to a Croatian woman who stole his heart. Unfortunately, she died before the works were finished.

Facts and figures about the lighthouse:

  • Commissioned by Deputazione di Borsa, Trieste, and built in 1818 to the design of the famous architect Pietro Nobilo;
  • 36 metres high;
  • Its light can be seen as far as 18 nautical miles;
  • The first lighthouse in the world to use gas from coal distillation for lighting;
  • One keeper is in charge of the lighthouse today, and the lighting has been automatized.
